2020.11.28 02:46 JoseCame 1080p IPS or 1440p TN?

So i've been struggling choosing between 2 types of monitors at the same price (around 280 dollars) both of them are 144hz, im just wondering if 1440p is worth it in TN over 1080p Ips. (i really can't go 1440p ips because is 100 dollars more in my country)
-The 1080p is 24 in and the 1440p is 27
-I have a 3070 so i can definitely play at 1440p
-I mostly play Single player games and a little of fps like warzone.

2020.11.28 01:53 kmontywinterkill Kristian montgomery and the winterkill band Press release

Greetings, Kristian is about to release his 2nd full length album. Following up his debut 16 song record "The Gravel church" . The 10 song album "Prince of poverty" defines his sound and is sure to give him a seat at the table with today's major label artists. "The Gravel church " was less than 2 months old when he returned to ultrasound to begin work on the next record. We are excited about the fine line this new work walks between art and marketability. Its a new sound that has caught the ear of anyone who hears it. With such diversity on his first album the second has been fine tuned and is now easily recognized as his own style. His last album has been given rave reviews in Houston TX, Nashville TN but also in places like London, France and Denmark where Alt country is just emerging as a popular genre. We have attached a B-side single "Soul for soul" where Kristian took an acoustic country style and incorporated the Harpsichord into a song that also features a gringing les Paul through a Marshall amp in the bridge. He's reducing what it means to be country in a genre that desperately needs him. Please consider supporting the next album. We would be grateful for a review/play but also are available for interviews. We hope to find a place to exclusively release the record. Until then please enjoy "soul for soul"

2020.11.27 21:08 CanadaSoonFree Torn between monitor upgrades for my 2060 while I wait for my 3080. Suggestions?

Have a 3080 on order and am considering a monitor upgrade. People tell me it’s criminal to run 1080p on a 3080 hah so here I am!
I’m rocking an i9-9900k and a 2060 regular. I currently game on an aorus 240hz 1080p TN panel.
Some good deals on monitors for BF and I’m itching to upgrade for my 3080. Not interested in 4K gaming at the moment I think it’s still a bit out for what I do.
I most play competitive games at high refresh rates. COD, Valorant, fortnite etc. How jarring is it going to be switching to 1440p 144hz IPS panel?
I do see some 1440p 240hz TN panels, are those any good or even worth considering? Seems like the colours are more vibrant with an IPS panel.
Also, can a 2060 even support 1440p, 144hz or even 240hz with the TN panel on Low - Medium settings?
TLDR: Love to hear some discussion! What’s a good upgrade path for 1440p semi-competitive gaming with a mix of some single player games on high settings; keeping in mind I’m on a 2060 waiting for a backordered 3080.
<3
Edit: considering these monitors
Aorus fi27q - 750$CAD
Benq ex2780q - 550$CAD
Asus tuf vg27aq - 500$CAD
The aorus supports 48-165 freesync range so I’m kinda leaning to that.

2020.11.27 21:07 Nyankolas Hello, i need advice regarding IPS vs TN

5 years ago i bought a 300$ AOC 2460PG TN panel with 1080p, 144hz, gsync and since then i havent had a single problem with it despite using it every day. Not a single dead pixle, no nothing. One week ago i decided it is time for an upgrade in resolution so i went out and bought the most expensive 4k 144hz gsync IPS display i could find wich was a Acer CP7271k at 2100$ to avoid all the problems i've read about regarding backlight bleed. When i got it however it not only had some backlight bleed, but also 3 dead pixles on day one. Before i returned it i discoverd that these issues can develop over time as well so i decided to get back my money instead of a replacement. My question is: Are TN panels less vulnrable to dead pixles than IPS and should i get a new 1440p TN panel insted if a higher resolution is the only upgrade i want?

I'll be away for most of the day, but I will reply to emails and messages as soon as I'm able to. It may take me a few days to get to all of the messages, so I really appreciate your patience.

2020.11.27 13:34 Xtenz29 Can't decide between ASUS VG259Q, ACER Nitro VG252QP and AOC G2590PX

Hello everyone
So after accidentally breaking my MAG241C, i got "refund" and I'm looking for a new monitor.
This time I would like a G-Sync or G-Sync Compatible. 1080p 144hz and preferably an IPS panel. I found a lot of TN panels but I'm really scared of the quality of the colors and their poor viewing angles. I have a pretty tight budget.
After much research, I came to the conclusion that the ASUS VG259Q and the ACER Nitro VG252QP might be perfect for me. The problem is that I can't decide between them.
I think the main difference is that ACER has 2ms while the ASUS has 1ms. Is it important? I don't think so. And in France, on the website where i got a "refund" ACER is ~50€ cheapers.
I haven't seen a lot of ACER reviews and read that the ASUS doesn't have such good color quality, is that true? Does "G-Sync compatible" really work well between 48-144hz?
I am also hesitant with the AOC G2590PX. Its G-Sync range is 30-144hz instead of 48-144hz for the other two. It's a nice margin knowing that my setup is starting to get old.
The only problem is that it is a TN panel and I am very very afraid of the quality of the colors ... if someone uses it and can give me their opinion, that would be great!
I will mainly use this monitor to play fast FPS but also a lot of single player games.
I would like to have your opinion and your advice concerning these two monitors.
Thank you in advance !

2020.11.26 23:57 0toHeroInvesting Is over diversification bad? Are less stocks more profitable? Starting a new portfolio

In this post I am going to share my experience as I start a new portfolio from 0$ and keep adding funds to it every month as I try to grow it as fast as possible
Hey everyone Happy Thanksgiving and Welcome! So, I have deposited and invested in the stock market all the money I managed to save up in the last month as I deposited 3500$ in my eToro portfolio on the 12th of November and I am already up more than 7% in just two weeks.
As my portfolio has constantly outperform the big 3 indexes the Nasdaq100, the SP500 and the Dow Jones 30 almost every day since starting my portfolio. Here is a comparison of my portfolio vs the indexes since starting as I am up over 7%. Portfolio v Index
So i wondered? Is it really bad to own more stocks? Is less > more? What is your opinion on this subject? I believe that it is way better to be invested in more companies and to add and grow your position in time as you also see how the companies evolve and you can also do some price averaging.
So here is my current portfolio composition as I split all my money equally to start, I will go into very few little details about everyone so I don’t make this a 2 hour read time.
I will start now by going alphabetically and not in the most important order as the first company that I own is BYD which is a rival company for both Tesla and NIO in the EV market as they focus on cars, new energy solutions and electronics. They are also developing a lot of commercial EV like buses, coaches and taxis which will be a great addressable market for them as they are not rivaled in those segments at the moment. The company has gone up a lot in value this year as you can see in this graph and have a Forward P/E of more than 100 but I believe this company will greatly expand its sales and be one of the leaders in the segment especially in China which is the biggest EV market. https://ibb.co/gVVwpfR / https://ibb.co/z7YBGr9
The second holding is Apple, is there anybody that doesn’t know this company? They are the biggest company in the world and they continue to expand with new products and services every day, I don’t see this company going down in the short term or the long term as they have pretty expensive at a 35 P/E but earnings are still rising especially with more subscription based income coming in with the release of the Apple One Bundle. https://ibb.co/Tm3hWMZ / https://ibb.co/Q9YjJTx / https://ibb.co/BrzkHCY
AbbVie is a health company that produces a lot of great drugs and has more than 26 million patients in over 200 countries that are treated every year. They are one of the best companies in the sector and are still down about 25% from the all time highs while only trading at a forward P/E of 8 which is very low. https://ibb.co/9nn4z0q / https://ibb.co/mXh3JL5 / https://ibb.co/cwhJgB5
AMD is a well established companies that creates high performance GPU’s for both personal computer and for data centers, the company has turned around and have started a great path to success since the newest CEO took the job in 2014 as the stock was trading at 2$ and while the company is trading at a very high forward P/E they have a lot of room to grow in this new economy as the EPS is expected to increase by more than 40% quarter over quarter https://ibb.co/dpwYPcy / https://ibb.co/7vwWHtC / https://ibb.co/yF0RmQv
Amazon is the internet retail juggernaut and cloud servicing company that has also started to expand in more and more domains like pharmacy just last week, though the company is also trading at a very high PE they have a lot of room to grow internationally and also are expanding in a lot more domains at a very fast rate. https://ibb.co/4TnGhkt / https://ibb.co/c6W2Ypx
Aphria is a Canadian company that mainly grows cannabis for medical use but has recently acquired a beverage company and is look to expand its product line, especially with the legalizing of marijuana more and more obvious in the US. They are one of the companies that stands to benefit the most from this as they are also expected to be the first to reach profitability by next year compared to Aurrora Canabis and Cannopy Growth. https://ibb.co/KrfL267 / https://ibb.co/kJ8yxDR
Broadcom is one of the biggest American semiconductor solutions provider, they are a very good play for the sector as they only trade at a forwarde P/E of 17 which is very good compared to comptetitors. https://ibb.co/8KFmX88 / https://ibb.co/q18SzPb
Everyone also knows Boeing as they are one of the biggest commercial manufacturers of jetliners, defence, space and security systems. The have suffered a lot in the last 2 years after the 737 accidents and the recent stay-at-home economy, but the ban on the plain has been lifted in the US and will be followed by the European Union soon, they have a big backlog of planes to work through while this situation will improve and air travel returns slowly in the next years. https://ibb.co/JxZYZ6D / https://ibb.co/NVbhDLQ
Alibaba is a online e-commerce giant that has expanded into cloud computing services also and stands to benefit a lot from the stay-at-home economy while also having just a forward PE of 32 which is very low compared to Amazon as they are the Chinese version of them. The company also owns Ant Group which is one of the largest fin tech companies in the world and will likely gain a lot after they finally manage to go public. https://ibb.co/0JPN6DN / https://ibb.co/6NgjGNV /
Berkshire is the child company of Warren Buffet as they are a holding company that engages in diversified business like technology, banks, insurance and much more. The company is currently trading at a very low P/E an barely above the price/book value as even the founders of the company believe this as they have continued to buy back shares of the company in the last year at the fastest rate in company history. https://ibb.co/bP6VjpM / https://ibb.co/hf5hX39
Caterpillar is one of best companies in manufacturing, construction and mining equipment. They are trading at almost 3 time sales with a high P/E but this is likely to regain momentum with the China trade war relaxing with the new Biden administration as well as the reopening of the economy https://ibb.co/pnC17PM / https://ibb.co/2vsQSjt
Chipotle Mexican is one of the best companies right now in the fast food business as they continue to innovate and have just opened they’re first digital only store. The company is trading at a very high P/E but has substantial growth potential so I believe it will be a great buy for the future. https://ibb.co/GCqd3Y9 / https://ibb.co/JnBm3bx
Costco is one of the world biggest retailers that has a great business model as they are making most of they’re money through membership fees unlike other retailers that mostly rely on prices, the are trading at just 1 times sales which is very good and they have a lot of room to grow especially with improve China relationships. https://ibb.co/X4M76Vd / https://ibb.co/ypg3Gyc
Crowdstrike is a cyber security company that has seen a huge spike due to the transition to more and more digital presence for all the companies. They are a company that I believe is here to stay and just started to become profitable in the last quarter. https://ibb.co/zNbfhL9 / https://ibb.co/mBw2TKj
Carvana is one of the best players for the second hand car market as they operate a unique e-commerce platform for people to buy, sell or finance cars. They are one of my favorite companies as they are also just starting to make money as they continue to expand they’re presence. https://ibb.co/QPZ1wnt / https://ibb.co/0rS6LrQ
CVS is a health and pharmacy companies that owns the most pharma stores in the US, the company has been hit recently by the news that Amazon is getting into pharmacy delivery but I believe they will be a great play for the vaccine distribution play as the company is only trading at a forward P/E of 8 and is trading below value of sales while also offering a dividend of 2% https://ibb.co/KNH6v5G / https://ibb.co/8Ps3QRB
Delta is one of the major airlines in the US and as I wanted to be exposed to some recovery plays I choose this company as I believe air travel will come back in the next years. The financials are not great for the company but they did manage to cut the cash burn rate in the last quarter. https://ibb.co/gyrSYYb / https://ibb.co/KsNbFHg
Deere is another great industrial and manufacturing play for the recovery stocks. The company is trading at a pretty high P/E ratio for them as the stock has runed very high in the last months but they do offer a dividend of 1% which is much better than any bank savings account and also have the potential for growth and also are a pretty reliable way to diversify portfolios. https://ibb.co/NSsCGN1 / https://ibb.co/thrY6W2
Disney is a very diversified family friend entertainment and media company as they have a lot of great business that will benefit a lot from the re-opening while this contributed a lot to the huge expansion of the streaming business with Disney+ and Hulu so the financials are not great but I believe this will hugely improve in the next couple of years. https://ibb.co/BG0jctn / https://ibb.co/7GR9h3c
Draftkings is an American daily fantasy sport operator that has expanded into the huge market of online gambling as more and more us states are legalizing gambling so they have a lot of room to grow in front of them especially with a great online presence with financials not being very important at the moment as they continue to grow they’re presence https://ibb.co/k8dtJmM / https://ibb.co/HgGQvG2
Dominos Pizza is one of the biggest pizza companies in the world and are also one of the best in implementing they’re presence in the delivery services as they are way better at this than others companies like Papa John’s. https://ibb.co/NZXkQjg / https://ibb.co/FVGXXBY
Etsy is a e-commerce platform for creative goods and services and has seen a huge rise in popularity and will probably remain a big gainer from this past year, though they are trading at over 70times earnings this will likely improve very much in the next years as they are expected to expand and improve earnings substantaly. https://ibb.co/5MN9zb7 / https://ibb.co/PYz0NWK
Ford is one of the biggest car makers in the world, I really like this company as it having a big push to move to the EV world with the Mustang Mach E, the EV Transit and the hugely anticipated EV F-150, the company is expected to have huge improvements in the next year as they have decent financials and are one of the best companies to own for a dividend investing strategy. https://ibb.co/MhwMB47 / https://ibb.co/745w8vq
Facebook is the largest social media network in the world that also owns Instagram, they have been struggling in the last months due to the political environment but I believe they will continue to be a giant in the tech sector as they are finding new ways to improve revenue streams especially in the highly active Instagram platform as they are trading at pretty much the same P/E like the other big tech companies but are expected to see a growth in advertising money as companies move to a more digital presence. https://ibb.co/SVjFGvc / https://ibb.co/T1Ds8V8

The company also has an impressive yield of almost 2% https://ibb.co/xjYVMx4 / https://ibb.co/q9hjp48
I also bought NetFlix as I believe them, Disney and Roku will be some of the largest players in the streaming business as traditional TV and cinema are a dying business at the moment. The company is trading at a premium but this is due to them dumping money in high quality content to grow they’re subscriber base while they also have steadily increase subscriptions cost in the last years. I believe they will do better next quarter and will see a re-test of all time highs. https://ibb.co/VN2TF6f / https://ibb.co/B6j9zTn
I also own NIO more as a spec play to be well diversified in the EV world, I believe this is a long term investment as the stock price has gone up like bananas recently, the company will have to have perfect growth in the next couple of years to justify an increase in value as they are still losing money. https://ibb.co/MZ2NL4v / https://ibb.co/mt8f3ZR

Palantir is a highly controversial name right now but its products and services are really good as they are earning more and more stamps of approval with government contracts while also expanding to commercial use. PayPal is another great company that will do very well in the future as payments transition to a more digital approach and the company is transitioning to allow cryptocurrencies as well which will attract even more users. AT&T is one of the largest providers in the us and seems to be getting back on track after they have struggled in the past decade, they trade at only 8 times forward P/E and have one of the best dividend yields at more than 7% so I believe this is a must have staple in your portfolio that brings stability and cash flow. https://ibb.co/cYcfYMm / https://ibb.co/8D3NzZr
While Target has been doing some amazing things as they operate as a general merchandise retailers and are doing some amazing things with online sales, they currently have seen a spike in the last months and are trading at a p/e of over 22 but I see them as a long term winner that offers both growth and value with a dividend yield of 1,5%. https://ibb.co/Fzd8TMw / https://ibb.co/NLnw4Lv
While the other communication provider that I like is T-Mobile US which has seen a huge spike in user growth and are poised to do a lot of great things with the 5G cycle, they trade at a very high multiple for this sector but the growth expectations are huge for this company. https://ibb.co/PCDFD38 / https://ibb.co/BTSzTMp
Moving on, one of the biggest gainers this year, TESLA is also one of my favorite companies to own as they continue to expand the products they offer and improve margins on vehicle, they are also expanding into more and more services, while manufacturing is growing exponentialy. They trade at insane P/E’s but they have just managed to be included in the SP500 so this may bring some stability to the stock as the company continues to grow in the next decade.https://ibb.co/6rNJf6q / https://ibb.co/CWN6wD4

Zoom is the one company that I will be selling in the next couple of days. I know they are one of the best video conferencing apps out there, but I believe they will have a lot of problem due to a number of free apps that also offer great quality while the company is trading at insane p/e numbers. I know this trend is here to stay, but I thing there are far better play in the stock market out there rather than Zoom at this price point. https://ibb.co/T1tStb8 / https://ibb.co/rmxh0x3
I know I didn’t get into in-depth stuff, technical analysis, fundamentals and more but I will continue go more in depth with this stocks as time goes on.
So here how I want to make my portfolio look like when I have enough money to open all the positions. TARGETED PORTFOLIo
As you can see a quarter of my portfolio will be invested in high quality companies that are pretty safe in my opinion. While over 45% of the portfolio will go to companies that I really like, that have a pretty low risk in my opinion and can offer great returns in the future. While I will also use about 22% of my portfolio into more risky companies that can bring very good profits for the portfolio but in my opinion are not as safe as the others.
And finally I will invest about 7% of my portfolio into more speculative stocks or hedge stocks like Barrick Gold and Goldman Sachs. I don’t want to keep money on the sidelines at the moment as I expect the stock market will keep rising for a couple of years at a rapid pace due to the recovery of the economy.

2020.11.26 23:56 0toHeroInvesting Is over diversification bad?

Next Era Energy is the largest electric utility by market cap and has the world largest generator of renewable energy from wind and sun and stand to benefit a lot from a Biden administration that is why they are trading at such high multiples at the moment.
Nike is my favorite apparel play as I believe it is the most desired my a lot of people and keeps expanding. I really like how the company is managed and I believe in them for the long-run. https://ibb.co/jw1zjgj / https://ibb.co/RYR4QSP

I also like owning Pepsico alongside Coca Cola as they are the two biggest players in the sector and I believe that they will both benefit a lot in the next years from the economy recovery. With pepsico offering a 2,7% dividend and a great growth path I really like owning this stock https://ibb.co/2SY4xPY / https://ibb.co/Sdt2hGC
Pinterest is an up and coming social media platform that has a great ad friendly setup and could see growth in the next years. They are trading at insane PE ratios but that should catch up to the company in the future and I believe you must own it to be well diversified. https://ibb.co/gwGFbyb / https://ibb.co/5TYz4KS
Palantir is a highly controversial name right now but its products and services are really good as they are earning more and more stamps of approval with government contracts while also expanding to commercial use. Financial info is not that good as the company barely reported they’re first earnings after the IPO. https://ibb.co/fdQ42gc / https://ibb.co/wyTJSG2
PayPal is another great company that will do very well in the future as payments transition to a more digital approach and the company is transitioning to allow cryptocurrencies as well which will attract even more users. They have had a greet increase in revenue and eps in the last quarters and I expect that to continue to grow. https://ibb.co/9tXxhJZ / https://ibb.co/M5vCynn

While SunRun is another great play for the new Biden administration as well as the transitioning to more renewable energy as they may see a huge boost in revenue growth and earnings with more money being pumped into the renewable sector. https://ibb.co/0jr3TRg / https://ibb.co/NmdSdwP
Everyone also knows Starbucks, as I expect them to be a huge gainer on a improved US-China relationship so despite suffering a lot from this economy the stock is still up more than 16% in the last year while revenues have declined, expect this to bounce back by 2021-2022. https://ibb.co/s5nTzQX / https://ibb.co/fDyhvX3
Shopify is a multinational e-commerce cloud based platform for merchants like small and medium sized business so that can easily have an online store that they can manage payments for, orders inventory and much more.
Visa is the biggest global payments technology company and is expected to continue to grow as more people start using cashless payment options, they are a great growth and value company for the future as cash payments is a dying proposition worldwide. https://ibb.co/CVXgZD9 / https://ibb.co/BPKxFfZ

So if you are a long term investor you should get into this stock I believe. https://ibb.co/6rk2qNQ / https://ibb.co/mC35VPr

Visa is the biggest global payments technology company and is expected to continue to grow as more people start using cashless payment options, they are a great growth and value company for the future as cash payments is a dying proposition worldwide. https://ibb.co/CVXgZD9 / https://ibb.co/BPKxFfZ
Wal-Mart, the biggest employer in the US continues to do amazing stuff as they continue to expand they’re online presence and compete with Amazon as they trade at a 23 P/E and also offer a dividend yield. they are a great play alongside with Amazon which trades at much higher valuations. https://ibb.co/Sr9s83J / https://ibb.co/0CvZKkD
Wynn is another great recovery stock that I like as recently we found out that foot traffic in Macau has ramped up, this bolds well for the company as they will be one of the biggest gainers on the reopening. So if you are a long term investor you should get into this stock I believe. https://ibb.co/6rk2qNQ / https://ibb.co/mC35VPr

2020.11.26 23:26 mokkat My review of the Redmibook 16

I wanted a budget 15+” Renoir laptop to complement my desktop PC, and this seemed to check all the boxes, with a good price tag and no compromises in areas that matter too much to me.
In this market, getting a good budget Renoir laptop is hard, especially if you want one with a good display. Here in Scandinavia, Ideapads have been sold out or stuck as 45% NTSC non customizable options since summer, you cannot get a 15” HP with the good screen in Europe and they’re way more expensive anyway, the Tongfang with the 4600H is extinct as far as I know, and so on. So I ended up buying a Redmibook 16 with the 4500U and 16GB ram.
I could have gone with a higher end Renoir, or waited for the 5000 series, but at the end of the day I decided the cheaper 4500U and 2666mhz ram was perfectly fine for my use.
I bought it from Tradingshenzhen. Seems like a decent site, with a much more focused product lineup than your usual Chinese site, and actually more of a German company if you look at the website and customer support. The packaging was stellar. They use “Global Priority shipping” to ship without additional import fees, and though I wasn’t 100% convinced, I didn’t pay any additional fees or tax.
In all I paid 562€ with shipping. It is not available nearly that cheap currently, but it may be again when (and if) they get more stock with the cheaper Chinese Windows option.
Software
Regarding the Chinese version of Windows, I used my Outlook account to tie in the Windows Home license, reinstalled English Windows with a USB stick, and now it seems to be activated off of the linked license. I’m not sure if that also means you could just grab the key with a PowerShell command and reuse it for English Windows, if you use an offline account.
Driver wise most of this hardware is covered by Windows Update, but if you want you can grab the drivers for the Redmibook 14 II, since both laptops use the same internals. I think I only installed the Xiaomi custom power plan. USB tether your phone for internet if the wifi card isn’t working and you have no other option.
The BIOS is very locked down, but at least you can disable Secure Boot and install Linux. I haven’t dabbled much in Linux, but I tried a live build of Pop OS off a USB stick and it seems to work great with this hardware (battery life estimates were also great with TLP).
Xiaomi included three performance modes. “Silence” caps the 4500U at 10w on battery and 15w plugged in, “Turbo” does 15-18w on battery and 35w+ plugged in, and the middle option “Balance” seems to perform much like Turbo, at least in stress testing, but I guess it is it more restrained in light use.
Hardware
This laptop is built very well. Sturdy aluminium case, with little to no flex anywhere. The ports are nice and snug. I like the hinge, you can open it with one hand, but it isn’t loose or wobbly at all. Very clean & classy look overall, I’m glad they went with a small logo on the back. Slim design and 1.75kg are much appreciated coming from a old 2.3kg 15” laptop.
The keyboard is good. I would probably have preferred a Lenovo keyboard, but this is perfectly fine as well. Very slightly mushy, but the key spacing and general feel is good, and I can type fast and consistently. The centered, numpad-less layout is a plus for me as well. I don’t mind that it isn’t backlit, I just hope the letters on the keys don’t wear out too badly if they’re just printed on.
I like the right side layout with the full arrow keys and home/end/pgup/pgdn buttons, which was one of the reasons I went with this over the Honor Magicbook Pro.
Trackpad is good as well. Not sure if it is plastic or glass, but it feels nice. Again, the centered layout is preferable for me, and the big size is welcome. There’s a slight cavity below the bottom area of the touchpad, for the in-trackpad physical left/right mouse buttons, which can make a sound when you just tab it. I rarely hear it as I usually tab in the top and middle part of the pad. I think I saw a video where a guy put a foam pad in there to counteract the sound, which should be an easy fix.
The display in this laptop is gorgeous. 100% srgb, pretty much color accurate, and reportedly has around 1500:1 contrast. 300 nits with matte coating is fine. I have next to no backlight bleed on this unit as well. 16.1” with tiny bezels is lovely, and I don’t mind the 16:9 ratio when the vertical real estate is good. My old laptop has an atrocious TN screen, so a great screen was an all-or-nothing point for me.
Something I haven’t seen mentioned anywhere, is the fact that this display responds well to EDID tinkering with Custom Resolution Utility. I got it to 72hz, which is great since I use a 75hz desktop monitor and 60hz feels noticeably slower. I also added a Freesync range of 42-72hz. Your mileage may vary if you try this. Probably works on the Magicbook Pro as well, same panel.
The battery life is so-so, but in a good way. The battery is only 48wh, but Renoir draws very little power with light use, so it should actually be able to reach the advertised 10-12 hours. With my use it is more like 6-8 hours. I think it only lasts for 2-3 hours if I were to play games. I would have loved to see a bigger battery with this APU, but at least this smaller one charges really quickly with the tiny 65w charger. I want to get a new charger at some point though, this one is for the US and the included EU adapter is loose enough that it keeps falling off accidentally if I graze it or tug slightly on the cable.
I have mixed feelings about the Realtek 8822CE network card in this laptop. I’m not sure if it’s my spotty 4G internet, Bluetooth 4.2 wireless speaker, or the amount of signal waves in my apartment building, but the wifi and BT have problems occasionally, especially if used at the same time. Bluetooth stutters if the laptop is not plugged in, not sure if that’s Realtek or just Windows misbehaving. I have ordered an AX200 to replace it, since it is the cheapest type of PC upgrade anyway.
Besides the keyboard backlighting, other areas where Xiaomi cut costs are the Sata 3 SSD, USB 2.0 port on the right side, the speakers, and the lack of a webcam.
Sata 3 does not make a difference with my use.
I can live with one slower USB port for mice and such when there’s a faster USB A and multiple USB C ports.
The speakers are not great. Pretty much bass-less and not that loud, but clear at least.
Laptop webcam quality in general is not great, and I rarely need a webcam anyway, so I decided to use my phone as a webcam, installed Iriun and ordered a dirt cheap phone tripod on Ebay.
Performance
This laptop is very pleasant and snappy to use. Perfect for light use and media consumption, but with power under the hood if you need it. Work wise I am going to be doing light programming and music stuff with Ableton, so this is perfect, even if AMD did omit SMT.
The thermals and noise are great. In idle it pretty much drops to 40 degrees C or below with the fan silent. Even under stress testing, the fan at 100% is relatively quiet and unobtrusive, although the APU can reach 90 degrees C which is not surprising given this ultrabook part can draw 35w+. Real world application and games will rarely get anywhere near maxing all six cores and drawing that much though, at least not the ones I’m using.
The light games I have tried have run well. The integrated GPU is very impressive for what it is, even at the full 1080p. I had no problems getting triple digits in CSGO or running AoE2:DE. At this price, I feel I won’t miss having 3200mhz ram for slightly higher performance, since this is just a budget laptop and I will play heavier titles on my desktop anyway. I have a ton of lower end games on Steam, so there is plenty of entertainment to be had.
When I ran LatencyMon I got a single hiccup due to ndis.sys, which leads me to believe it might have been the network card hanging. Wouldn’t be the first time. A one off or rare thing, but hopefully the replacement network card will address it.
Conclusion
This is really good if you can get one cheap. A shame you have to go through China for an affordable machine with these specs though. Compromises in a few odd places, but the build, display, etc. are better than its price point. I went with the lower end 4500U, but even low end Renoir still beats most other laptops, and for my use I’m sure it will be plenty for years to come.
I would not be surprised to see a Redmibook 16 II next year, with Lucienne and maybe even Cezanne parts, although it remains to be seen whether you will still be able to import cheap Chinese laptops in the EU after the VAT rules are overhauled in July 2021.

2020.11.26 21:28 Xtenz29 Can't decide between ASUS VG259Q and ACER Nitro VG252QP

Hello everyone
Before we start, excuse me for my poor english, it's not my native language.
I will mainly use this monitor to play fast FPS but also a lot of single player games.
I would like to have your opinion and your advice concerning these two monitors.
Thank you in advance !

2020.11.26 10:24 Monk19999 CAN'T DECIDE ON A BUDGET MONITOR

Hello guys, so yesterday my old fella Samsung SyncMaster E2200 which I had for quite a while decided to die on me so I bought a very 144Hz poor monitor AOC G2490VXA which has incredible HUGE GHOSTING and that I'm gonna return it and seek for something more expensive AND I CAN'T DECIDE BETWEEN THOSE :
OMEN by HP Z7Y57AA
LCD VA AOC C24G1
LED TN AOC G2590FX
AOC G2460PF
MSI OPTIX G24C4
I mostly use the PC for videogames, I play competitive games (CS:GO, PUBG, LEAGUE OF LEGENDS) but also single player game (recently started playing RDR2).
I'm really bad at choosing monitors because I'm not very knowledgeable so pls pls pls, can you help me out. I know VA panels look better than TN panels, but also have ghosting problems and tearing, I just want something in between, if it was your choice to buy it for yourself what would you buy?
ALSO I HAVE NVIDIA GRAPHICS CARD

2020.11.26 01:23 sodalaama Recommendations for first monitor

I've had a dual 24" monitor setup for a long time using some pretty cheap TN panels and I'm looking to switch to a single ultrawide. I have a 3rd gen i5 processor and a 1060 GTX 6GB video card (not looking to spend a lot more on a new graphics card if I can avoid it). I'm shopping from Canada and I'd really prefer buying from somewhere that accepts returns so that I can try out a couple if I need to (totally cool if I have to pay return shipping as long as it isn't outrageous and there isn't a hassle for returns).
My main uses will be work, programming, and some gaming (simulation and strategy games mainly). I don't use my current setup for photography (lightroom) because the TN monitors just aren't good for that but if possible it would be great if I could so that I don't have the hassle of using another computer. It's by no means a dealbreaker but having an integrated usb hub would be nice.
I'm leaning towards a 34" and I'm willing to pay a bit extra for 3440x1440 but definitely not looking for anything that much more than 1k Canadian (a bit over is alright if it is worth it).
I'm leaning towards IPS because I'm not sure how much colour shifting from a VA panel would affect the photo editing. I've only ever used IPA and TN monitors. I'm not a professional photographer and I don't need to be extremely accurate with colours so if a VA monitor is good enough that would be fine.
I'd also prefer a 18001900r curve because of the photos but I've seen a 1500r screen and it was pretty sweet.
My main candidates so far have been:
Any recommendations? Thanks in advance.

2020.11.25 19:46 rantingelf Trigeminal Nueralgia on too of MS

My mom was diagnosed with TN on top of her 8 year progressive MS, which had put her in a wheelchair. She isn’t responding to her painkillers anymore, and can’t even eat or drink anything. She’s living a life of absolute misery, and so are we. This wretched place where I live, it doesn’t even allow a person to die with dignity. I know that every single day my mom hopes to die, but she can’t. I don’t know what to do. Why can’t someone be in charge of their own death when life gets to the point where it’s not worth living anymore?

2020.11.25 10:09 MeetingOfTheMars Can you check my "second place" dream birthday build?

It's happening!
After years of piecing computers together from bits and scraps of whatever I could find, I am finally building the PC of my dreams. I'm going for "solid second place" components because I'm just not willing to pay the premium for the very top shelf. I plan to build in phases, and this is Phase 1 - just getting a barebones system up and running. Thanks for reading this post and for your help.
Here's my Phase 1 build on PCPartPicker

What will you be doing with this PC? Be as specific as possible, and include specific games or programs you will be using.
  1. ≥60 fps AAA gaming (Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Control, Cyberpunk 2077) on ultra settings with HDR and ray tracing on G-Sync compatible screens (a superultrawide 32:9 1440p display, and a 4K 65" OLED TV)
  2. Playing Half Life Alyx in VR at high/ultra settings at high enough framerates to avoid motion sickness
  3. Video conversion (from 4 and 5 below)
  4. Video ripping and playback (personal BluRay/DVD/VHS collection)
  5. Video capturing (live broadcast TV DVR)
  6. Home office productivity (video conferencing, web browsing, MS Office)
  7. Occasional video editing of 4K and 1080p content (not sure which software is best)
  8. 3D designing for 3D printing at home
  9. Learning more about coding and potentially Machine Learning in the future.
Not all at once of course. But it would be nice if there was a way to assign CPU cores to video tasks and game at the same time - but only if it didn't impact gaming performance. I'm not sure if that's possible though.

What is your maximum budget before rebates/shipping/taxes?
For this first phase, $1,500. For the final build, $5,000 total.

When do you plan on building/buying the PC? Note: beyond a week or two from today means any build you receive will be out of date when you want to buy.
I plan to buy all available parts on November 27th (my bday) and continue hunting for currently unavailable parts thereafter.

What, exactly, do you need included in the budget?
For now, just the tower internals, minus the optical drive and SSD. I already have the case (NCase M1, ITX size) and a 2TB SSD. (XPG, NVMe M.2). I just want to get a barebones running and upgrade parts as they become more available as I go. I'm pretty sure I'll need an RTX 3080, but I'm unsure on the manufacturer and would love to hear your thoughts on how to choose one.

Which country (and state/province) will you be purchasing the parts in? If you're in US, do you have access to a Microcenter location?
California, USA. But there's no Microcenter nearby, I cry sadly.

If reusing any parts (including monitor(s)/keyboard/mouse/etc), what parts will you be reusing? Brands and models are appreciated.
- NCase M1 case (V4) with optical drive slot
- XPG SX8200 Pro 2TB 3 NVMe Gen3x4 PCIe M.2 2280 SSD (Model#: ASX8200PNP-2TT-C)
- LG 65" C9 G-Sync compatible OLED TV, for gaming (Model#: OLED65C9PUA)
- Samsung 1080p 21.5" monitor, for productivity (hand me down)
- Generic USB keyboard (hand me down)
- Generic USB mouse (hand me down)
- Bose noise-cancelling headphones (daily driver)

Will you be overclocking? If yes, are you interested in overclocking right away, or down the line? CPU and/or GPU?
Probably. I'm interested in overclocking the Infinity Fabric to gain more performance out of the memory. I'm also interested in overclocking the GPU, although I can't tell the difference between the RTX 3080 models but I've hard EVGA is good. CPU overclocking isn't as interesting unless there's a compelling reason for any of my intended uses above.

Are there any specific features or items you want/need in the build? (ex: SSD, large amount of storage or a RAID setup, CUDA or OpenCL support, etc)
- For Phase 1, the GPU is just a small silent GT 710 card for productivity only. Upgrading to a proper GPU, probably a RTX 3080, will come later.
- It will eventually need a slim, slot-loading BluRay reader drive.
- The NCase M1 is a small case (12.7 liters / 3⅓ gallons in freedom units) and so all parts should be small.
- The case will either live next to my living room TV or on my desk tabletop so it must be silent or at least very quiet.
- I plan on using this PC to game on my LG TV mentioned above at first, and then on a Samsung Odyssey G9 display later.
- None of the VR headsets look great to me right now, except Valve's but it's still too expensive for me at the moment.
- After this PC rips and converts my personal media, the video files will then be hosted on my NAS running elsewhere on my home network.

What type of network connectivity do you need? (Wired and/or WiFi) If WiFi is needed and you would like to find the fastest match for your wireless router, please list any specifics.
Built-in Wifi 6 is preferred. I do not game competitively and prefer immersive single-player adventure games anyway. I expect wifi to be good enough which will hopefully make swapping the tower between my living room TV and home office desk tabletop easier. (Home router: Asus RT-AX88U)

Do you have any specific case preferences (Size like ITX/microATX/mid-towefull-tower, styles, colors, window or not, LED lighting, etc), or a particular color theme preference for the components?
Eventually, I want to add dual 240mm radiators with a custom loop (OptimumTech did a great video in the same case) both for the challenge and to see how many FPS I can get while keeping the PC cool and quiet. As for color scheme, I don't really care that much. My RGB memory is more because of availability than for its RGB features. I want this PC to be the strong, silent type. Think Mr. Darcy, but way nerdier.

Do you need a copy of Windows included in the budget? If you do need one included, do you have a preference?
Yes, but I have no student or educator discounts.

Extra info or particulars:
- I'm unsure of my memory selection. I've read that clock speed is most important followed by latency which I've tried to balance with my choice. I've also read that the Infinity Fabric can be overclocked to get more performance out of the memory and eek out a few more fps. Sounds like fun.
- I'm going for second best components, so I'd like to avoid an RTX 3090. If you have recommendations on choosing a manufacturer for a 3080 (or even a 3080 Ti, since I'll probably be waiting until January for a GPU anyway) I would love to hear your thoughts.
- To eliminate noise where possible, the power supply is intentionally overpowered so that it can run without moving fans more often. I'd also prefer that the motherboard didn't have any fans for the same reason, but I'm not sure if any good B550 boards offer this.
- I'm sure I've made some kind of boneheaded mistake. In which case, let me have it.
- Thanks so much for your help and for reading this far. I appreciate it!

Expect weekend and holiday case report delays. "Daily case counts reflect newly reported cases and may represent cases that were tested in the preceding days, which could significantly impact the count on days when a relatively large number of laboratory reports arrive in one day." SNHD confirmed they are not counting COVID-19 antibody positives into their COVID-19 positive case counts.
Majority of information is pulled from Southern Nevada Health District's COVID-19 dashboard and historical reports.
Our positives are increasing about under 1200/day, our recovery rate has decreased (80+% range), and our hospitalizations are rising. Protect our vulnerable and continue to practice good hygiene habits, including wearing a mask to prevent asymptomatic spread as mandated by Governor Sisolak (onus is on businesses, which we want to keep open, but Metro will not enforce it; OSHA is responsible for mask enforcement by fining the business). To report a non-compliant business through the state, call (702) 486-9020 or (775) 688-3700.
Doctors are doing convalescent plasma therapy treatments and are seeking plasma donors to help those in need. One plasma donation can help five patients. Blood donors can get the antibodies testing done for free.
FDA states 144 trials of therapeutics are underway to treat COVID-19. 457 more are in planning stages. Remdesivir has been FDA approved as a COVID-19 treatment (10/22). Despite recent studies showing that Remdesivir do not help in preventing COVID-19 deaths. Dexamethaaone and Regeneron's antibody cocktail (REGEN-COV2) are FDA approved for emergency based use. Eli Lilly's antibody treatment, bamlanivimab, receives emergency FDA approval (11/9).
Nevada has been approved for the 24-hour test procedure. FDA has approved a 30-minute and a 5-minute testing procedures. UNLV provides the main COVID-19 testing services. The first at-home testing kit was FDA approved on 5/15.
If you live within a 1-mile range of the Wal-Mart on Craig Rd, you qualify for a drone-delivered test kit to your front or back door.
Some testing sites require an appointment; some may need to be scheduled by your primary care physician or another authorized provider.
More test sites will open throughout December:
Drive-thru testing at Texas Station reopened on 11/13. 8am to 4pm, Thursday thru Monday. No appointment needed, results in 24 to 48hrs (setup your MyChart app account; 3 business day process).
City Serve coordinates testing sites throughout the valley. Testing is only on Saturdays. Schedule a no-cost test here: https://cityservelv.org/
The antibodies test was approved by the FDA a month ago. UMC, E7 Health and local laboratories are able to conduct antibodies testing. Cost is normally $149+, but your insurance may reimburse you for the test. Check your coverage first. Vitalant/Universal Blood Services will do a free antibody test for any eligible donors.
UMC is able to process 4,000 tests per day. It is encouraged for anyone to be tested. Symptoms are no longer required. Appointment is preferred, walk-up testing is available.
UMC's testing sites are inside Thomas & Mack Center and Cashman Field Center. They can do 1,200 tests per day, Tues-Sat 8am to 4pm. No symptoms, insurance, or citizenship required for testing. Schedule an appointment online through UMC's website (www.umcsn.com). A staff member will contact you back to schedule your appointment. According to their reps, there is no limit how often you can get tested. Sites are walk-in, appointment or walk-up. Both sites now use the self-nasal swab test kits.
UMC updates COVID-19 test guidelines:
New guidelines are to save test kits for those exhibiting symptoms.

Six months ago, the first vaccine was tested. More than 160 vaccine prototypes are being tested. Clinical trials of the vaccine were administered three months ago. Phase 1 & 2 of trial vaccines have completed with positive antibody results. Phase 3 clinical trials started with 30k volunteers; large test size of 3k vaccine test trials in the UK. Africa started their vaccine trials four months ago. Multiple sources stating to expect an FDA approved vaccine by beginning of next year.
Of the 100+ vaccines submitted, 22 have made the cut to go through testing and final FDA approval phases (5/15 briefing). The front runner vaccine is conducting human trails (Phase 3 aka final stage), completion date is pending. AstraZeneca is prepared to produce 2 billion doses once the vaccine is FDA approved. Pfizer claims their vaccine is more than 95% effective; goal end of the year. Moderna vaccine claims about 94.5% effective. Expected US authorization for Pfizer and Moderna along with distribution approval is expected within 24hrs of regulatory approval (note: they currently have 20M doses ready; vaccine is a two stage dose). Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine is 70% to 90% effective based on dosage program (single versus duo).
US government is working with four vaccine manufacturers who are in the final phases of vaccine trials, all prepared for massive vaccine output once FDA approval is given. Worldwide, six are in Phase III.

2020.11.25 01:15 ZShoot2kilZ Multi Monitor Setup!

Is it possible to use a BenQ XL2546K with an Asus rog swift pg279q with G Sync enabled as my secondary monitor?
Pretty much I want to play competitive FPS games at 1080p 240hz tn panel but switch to my secondary, 1440p 144-165hz G Sync panel for single player titles.
Really confused at the state of this by the end of 2020.
Would really appreciate some opinions!
Thanks. Take care!

(TIAY) Today I asked you, sad moments while playing fortnite?
My story is as follows:
I landed the rig wearing the tntina skin I was level 134, and I was heading to the vault when unfortunately, my father walked in telling me that my great grandmother had passed away. I left that game and haven't worn TnTina since, cause I can't play a single game with it without tearing up.
